Controversial Otterpool Park Plans Take a Step Forward
Shepway District Council has approved a draft masterplan surrounding proposals for the creation of the Otterpool Park Garden Town near Folkestone.
The controversial scheme, which has faced opposition from residents’ groups, would provide around 10,000 new homes and community facilities over the next 30 years.
Concerns have been raised that the area, which includes land on the present Folkestone racecourse site, does not have sufficient infrastructure or immediate employment opportunities that would support the creation of a new town located within East Kent. However, the council claimed there was a ‘desperate need’ for local housing in the area, with a focus on creating a high-quality development and jobs, services and facilities that would serve the area for decades to come.
According to the local authority, the plans “encourage generations of people to remain in the area for life”, and would be based around creating green, open spaces.
Following an initial recommendation, the council intends to submit an outline planning bid this summer.
