10 Top Local Tunbridge Wells Bands

Tunbridge Wells is full of up and coming talented musicians, as well as a handful of popular music venues including The Forum, The Grey Lady and The Pantiles’ very own Band Stand. With the help of The Forum’s very own Carolyn Gray we’ve put together a list of INDEX’s top 10 local bands and musicians.

Lady Bird

Definitely one to watch - starting out in 2016 as Belerve, then Purple Stains, before becoming Lady Bird, they’ve progressed from a small basement show in The Sussex Arms, to getting played on BBC Radio 1 last week, with a growing local fanbase. Their brash, bold songs and great showmanship make for a great live experience.

Over The Edge

A local jazz-funk/soul and latin band formed over 20 years ago by Peter Stone and Paul Beeching. Highlights must be supporting Ronnie Scott and Alexander O’Neal, and also playing at the Millennium Dome – now the O2. The band can be seen in the summer on the Pantiles bandstand and also often at the Grey Lady.

Dead Ceremony

“I’ve loved Dead Ceremony from the first time I heard them, and everytime I hear them I can’t understand why they haven’t achieved greater success.” – Carolyn Gray

Mike Wilton (The Standard Lamps)

Mike, both on his own, and with his band The Standard Lamps, writes incredible songs, plays incredible guitar, can stand in for another musician at a moment’s notice, and is remarkably humble about the whole thing. He might have a new record out soon…

Paul Cheese

Paul and his bike travel far and wide to record unusual sounds, and film. We admire anyone who can just ‘do their own thing’ in a creative manner. He’s just about to go in search of 25 forums around the Mediterranean.

Orestea

“I hadn’t heard Orestea until Local & Live last year, although I think they have been around for a while. A good, powerful female needs to be in the list somewhere.” – Carolyn Gray

Black Adder

Here’s a band that has been playing locally for a long time, and can still cheer up a pub with a humorous folk punk style. I guess this is a reminder that playing music should be fun, it’s not all serious, arty stuff!

 The Violet Jive

'A Retro Swing & Latin sound with Fresh Alternative twist'. The Tunbridge Wells based band play as various line ups from mellow Duo to full Quintet with Sax and Percussion and have both colourful covers sets for parties/events and originals material. Described as 'Musical Mixologists' for their ability to blend unexpected flavours such as Salsa, Rockabilly and Hip-Hop into an intoxicating sound.

TW3

Along with talented drummer David Ross, this popular, engaging band performs in many of the town’s pubs, and weddings, entertaining with an eclectic mix of hit tracks from 70s to modern day.

Tar Babies

The authentic sound of the Great British late 60s and early 70s. You will see and hear the best musicians in England play in this band. These musicians play with the likes of ELO, Gentle Giant, T'Pau, Bad Company, Mungo Jerry, Take That and Arthur Brown... The Tar Babies have been together for decades, longer than the Beatles! Playing from Bahrain to Brighton, they are the closest you can get to the golden era without a time machine.
